Shopping for gold jewellery comes with a lot of terms. Gold-plated. PVD. 14k. 18k. Solid gold.
They can all look beautiful on day one. The difference is how they're made, and how they wear over time. Here's a simple guide.
Solid gold
Solid gold is gold all the way through, mixed with other metals for strength. The karat tells you how much gold it contains. 18k is 75% gold. 14k is around 58%.
It's the most traditional option, and it lasts a lifetime. It also comes with a higher price tag, which is why many people save it for special pieces.
Gold-plated
Gold-plated jewellery has a layer of gold applied over a base metal. It's a popular way to get the look of gold at a more accessible price.
How long it lasts depends on the thickness of the layer and the metal underneath. Many gold-plated pieces are best kept away from water and taken off before showering or swimming.
PVD gold
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. It's a process where gold is bonded to the metal underneath in a vacuum chamber, creating a finish that's much more durable than a surface layer.
When PVD gold is applied to stainless steel, you get the best of both: the warm look of gold, on a strong, waterproof base.
Why PAPAIA uses PVD gold on stainless steel
We wanted jewellery you could wear every day without thinking about it. Through showers, swims and everything in between.
PVD gold on premium stainless steel gives us exactly that. Every gold PAPAIA piece is finished in 18k or 14k gold over stainless steel, so it's made to stay gold and won't turn your skin green.
It means pieces like the Hana Figaro Chain Necklace, the Classic Dome Ring and the Celestial Hoop Earrings can be worn every day, not saved for special occasions.
